UNS Controsoil is an andisol based substrate created from the volcanic ash of Mount Aso in Japan. Choosing the right substrate is a vital component for a successful planted aquarium. It allows plants to flourish while buffering the water to optimum levels for certain freshwater livestock. Proper aquarium substrate is paramount to successfully growing healthy aquatic plants. Controsoil is essential to provide a optimal environment for livestock. The texture and porosity provide the perfect medium for plant roots to latch onto. This soil is specifically designed for planted aquariums and shrimp keeping without excessive ammonia. Ultum Nature Controsoil does not require any initial rinsing/boiling and provides clear water upon initial filling. For the best results, place your Controsoil into your aquarium prior to adding water. Add water slowly without stirring up the soil. Directions: Place the substrate in to an empty aquarium. When filling the aquarium with water, place a dish or other item to disburse the water flow and minimize disruption to the substrate layer. How much soil do I need? Mixed feelings about this soil
The Controsoil is decent for propagating my live plants, but I did have some initial cloudiness in the water. After a day or two, it settled down and my fish seem happy now. Just wish it was a bit easier to rinse before adding it to the tank.

Not what I expected
I was really looking forward to using this substrate, but it arrived with some clumps and it broke down faster than I hoped. It did encourage some growth in my plants, but I expected more durability from a product like this. Disappointed overall.
